Areas of Focus
TheraGenetics focuses on central nervous system (CNS) disorders. These CNS disorders include illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and Alzheimer's disease. Although the exact causes of these illnesses are not known, they all have some genetic component. That is to say, family members of an affected person have a greater risk of developing the illnesses than the rest of the population.
Genes are not only an important factor in the development of these disorders; they also play an important role in determining whether or not a person will respond to the available drug treatments. Each of the conditions mentioned has one or more medications effective in treating or stabilising the disorder, yet these medications do not work in all patients and it is not possible to identify who will respond to treatment simply by knowing the individual characteristics of that person. TheraGenetics uses pharmacogenetics technology to identify who will respond to treatment to make sure that the right people get the right medication.
